Tracy Dot Com was a morning show personality in Jacksonville, Fla., dedicated to promoting awareness for non-profits and business for local owners. She earned the title Official Funologist for her daily zany TV live shots. Always with a smile and a positive message.

What the audience didn't know, as well as family and most of her friends, is Tracy hid a dark secret. Daily binge drinking. Which only worsened when she left the fast-paced media world behind to pursue a more stable career. The free time worked against her. Intensifying the disease of alcoholism to near death.

In Stumbling into Sobriety, Tracy shares intimate details from her final weeks of spiraling out of control, how she masterfully kept the drinking a secret, what it took to finally ask for help, and all the things she learned on her way back up.

This book is for anyone who struggles with or has overcome alcoholism. It's relatable to readers wanting more information about alcoholism or fearful of what sobriety looks like on the other side. It is also a good resource for those who love an alcoholic and yearn for a better understanding of what that person is thinking. Experiencing. Grappling.

Stumbling into Sobriety is raw. It's brutal honesty is, at times, hard to read. But the memoir is balanced with humor. The end result is a message of hope.

This is a short essay regarding the biochemical bonds victims of narcissistic abuse develop with their abusers. Featured on the Self-Care Haven website, the extended version of the article is now available in Kindle format. Many survivors of narcissistic abuse are confounded by the addiction they feel to the narcissist, long after the abusive relationship took a toll on their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Make no mistake: recovery from an abusive relationship can be very similar to withdrawal from drug addiction due to the biochemical bonds we may develop with our toxic ex-partners. Learn how these bonds create an addiction that is difficult to break. All proceeds for this e-book go back into supportive services for survivors through Self-Care Haven.

What mental health professionals are saying about this article:

"Brilliant article on trauma bonds and recovering from narcissistic abuse." - Andrea Schneider, LCSW, MSW.

"A must read! Perfect article to help you understand the biochemical changes in abuse." - Shannon Thomas, LCSW, Southlake Christian Counseling

As a social worker, I dealt with hundreds of drug addicts in my life. I grew attached to every one of them, listened to their stories, cared for them, and held their hands during the ordeals of withdrawal. I became good friends with many of them who were strong enough to recover and I don't think there is a greater reward in life than receiving a warm hug from someone whose life you helped save. But many a time I also found myself at the other end of the spectrum, when I stood in dreadful cemeteries, next to the families of the ones who couldn't withstand the damaging power of the drugs. Parts of my soul were reaped apart and left with them there, in the cold of their crypts. I dedicate this book to all those who departed and I pray they help us in our fight from wherever they are.

But I wanted this book to have an optimistic touch, and the book does have a happy ending. In a few minutes, you will meet Amanda, who went through the dark torments of drug addiction but came up on the other side happy to tell her story and help the others who accept an extended hand. She's been in the trenches and knows a thing or two about opioids addiction and rehab.

This book contains the stories of men and women who have used the HAMS (Harm reduction, Abstinence, and Moderation Support) program to overcome their problems with alcohol and change their lives. Experts in the addictions field say the following about this book:

Through these moving personal stories, we learn not only how HAMS works but how addiction works. And we learn that overcoming addiction doesn’t have to adhere to a rigid program or philosophy. HAMS succeeds because it connects with people who drink, on their own terms, respects their goals and wishes, recognizes their strengths and supports them where they need and want support. These little memoirs are as varied in style and substance as the individuals who wrote them, but they converge on themes that just don’t go away, including the inadequacy of AA for many who drink, despite its value for some. Intimately told, both raw and articulate, these memoirs reveal how people struggling with addiction can help each other through sensitivity and generosity rather than judgment and dogma.
Marc Lewis, PhD.
Author of The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction Is Not a Disease

If you are looking for an alternative to 12 step groups that will support you in changing your drinking - whether you want to abstain, moderate or just cut down - check out HAMS.
It's evidence-based, supportive, non-judgmental, non-religious and even fun!
Maia Szalavitz
Author of Unbroken Brain

Kenneth Anderson and April Smith have given us a book that will help thousands of people, told from the point of view of people who have already been helped by HAMS. Many of the stories show how ingenuity, freedom of choice, and concern for one’s wellbeing can lead to meaningful changes in problem drinking habits. Many of the stories would shock the hell out of most treatment programs and staff. Many of the stories had me biting my nails hoping that it would turn out okay. What a relief to be reminded that, given respect, kindness, and support, even the most outlandish harm reduction plans save and improve peoples’ lives.
Patt Denning, PhD
Director of The Center for Harm Reduction Therapy
Co-author of Over the Influence

The three-page introduction to Better Is Better ought to be required reading for anyone in this country with a connection to addiction and recovery (which is most of us, but especially health and mental health professionals). The scientific findings succinctly described there would re-shape US addiction treatment and recovery, if they were known and used. Unfortunately, these findings continue to be overshadowed by substantially outdated ideas and methods. This little page book then contains 14 stories of change (eight women, six men), none longer than three pages. These stories will be informative and inspiring to a wide range of individuals who are considering or acting upon a desire to reduce (or eliminate) drinking problems, and they could be the basis for discussion in a mutual help or treatment group. I can't think of a better bang for your 99 cents!
A. Tom Horvath, PhD
President, Practical Recovery Psychology Group, San Diego
Past President, SMART Recovery

HAMS is an amazing and much-needed organization, expanding how we think about addiction in brave and thought-provoking ways. Everyone should read this book.
Johann Hari
Author of Chasing the Scream

HAMS is a group for people who want support to changes their drinking. Support: not chastisement, not admonitions, not guilt tripping. Just sharing: feelings, experiences, histories, successes and failures. And that nonjudgmental approach - which is so different from AA - makes people feel better about themselves and allows them to pursue their goals better, longer, and in more areas of their lives (drinking included, but not exclusively). And what are their goals around drinking? Well, you’ll have to read this book of human stories to see!
Stanton Peele
Author of Recover!
Resilience Learned is a memoir: a saga of how a woman who rose like a phoenix from the ashes, after the decimating war within and around her brought her down to her knees. It is the story of her suffering and debilitating angst. But Life showed her that we are all stronger than our circumstances; we are stronger than our fears. The narration of her story shows you that you can emerge from adversity and the challenges you face with courage, hope and healing to live a full and meaningful life.Throughout her saga, Menaca narrates how hardship and war demolished all she knew. Caught in a war in Sri Lanka, as a child and a young woman, Menaca learned that one can heal and move forward only with loving support and encouragement. More importantly, she learned how to access her resilience through acceptance and forgiveness.Only compassion, empathy and humanity can heal the mistrust deeply imprinted on the victims of politics, betrayal and brutality. The scars inflicted by decades of bloody and brutal wars take a lifetime to heal from and come to terms with. Menaca shares how healing your wounds is not only possible but essential to creating the transformation you desire when you feel broken after years of struggling with adversity and grief.Resilience Learned is a heart-warming and inspiring story of a woman who did not give up. The book advocates embracing forgiveness and accessing the power of belief. It also demonstrates how taking practical steps can change your life for the better. The takeaway from Menaca’s story is that by being proactive you can reach your full potential and elevate your life to one of fulfilment.
