NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Journalist Adam Higginbotham’s definitive, years-in-the-making account of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster—and a powerful investigation into how propaganda, secrecy, and myth have obscured the true story of one of the twentieth century’s greatest disasters.

Early in the morning of April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four of the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station exploded, triggering history’s worst nuclear disaster. In the thirty years since then, Chernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world: shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility, and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers its citizens and the entire world. But the real story of the accident, clouded from the beginning by secrecy, propaganda, and misinformation, has long remained in dispute.

Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted over the course of more than ten years, as well as letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently-declassified archives, Adam Higginbotham has written a harrowing and compelling narrative which brings the disaster to life through the eyes of the men and women who witnessed it firsthand. The result is a masterful nonfiction thriller, and the definitive account of an event that changed history: a story that is more complex, more human, and more terrifying than the Soviet myth.

Midnight in Chernobyl is an indelible portrait of one of the great disasters of the twentieth century, of human resilience and ingenuity, and the lessons learned when mankind seeks to bend the natural world to his will—lessons which, in the face of climate change and other threats, remain not just vital but necessary.

Indeed, as the US-Sino AI competition begins to heat up, Lee urges the US and China to both accept and to embrace the great responsibilities that come with significant technological power. Most experts already say that AI will have a devastating impact on blue-collar jobs. But Lee predicts that Chinese and American AI will have a strong impact on white-collar jobs as well. Is universal basic income the solution? In Lee’s opinion, probably not. But he provides a clear description of which jobs will be affected and how soon, which jobs can be enhanced with AI, and most importantly, how we can provide solutions to some of the most profound changes in human history that are coming soon.

The bestselling author of E=mc2 weaves tales of romance, divine inspiration, and fraud through an account of the invisible force that permeates our universe—electricity—and introduces us to the virtuoso scientists who plumbed its secrets.

For centuries, electricity was seen as little more than a curious property of certain substances that sparked when rubbed. Then, in the 1790s, Alessandro Volta began the scientific investigation that ignited an explosion of knowledge and invention. The force that once seemed inconsequential was revealed to be responsible for everything from the structure of the atom to the functioning of our brains. In harnessing its power, we have created a world of wonders—complete with roller coasters and radar, computer networks and psychopharmaceuticals.

In Electric Universe, the great discoverers come to life in all their brilliance and idiosyncrasy, including the visionary Michael Faraday, who struggled against the prejudices of the British class system, and Samuel Morse, a painter who, before inventing the telegraph, ran for mayor of New York City on a platform of persecuting Catholics. Here too is Alan Turing, whose dream of a marvelous thinking machine—what we know as the computer—was met with indifference, and who ended his life in despair after British authorities forced him to undergo experimental treatments to “cure” his homosexuality.

From the frigid waters of the Atlantic to the streets of Hamburg during a World War II firestorm to the interior of the human body, Electric Universe is a mesmerizing journey of discovery.

In Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, veteran technology journalist Ashlee Vance provides the first inside look into the extraordinary life and times of Silicon Valley's most audacious entrepreneur. Written with exclusive access to Musk, his family and friends, the book traces the entrepreneur's journey from a rough upbringing in South Africa to the pinnacle of the global business world. Vance spent over 40 hours in conversation with Musk and interviewed close to 300 people to tell the tumultuous stories of Musk's world-changing companies: PayPal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity, and to characterize a man who has renewed American industry and sparked new levels of innovation while making plenty of enemies along the way.

Vance uses Musk's story to explore one of the pressing questions of our time: can the nation of inventors and creators which led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk--one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history--is a contemporary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy.

The motivation for this book is to give my homely contribution to the railway industry based on my experience and background in the field of RAMS and LCC applied to the railway industry. The railway industry is one of the most excited industry that I had a chance to deal with that have new technological challenges and issues to be solved now and in the coming future. I believe that the proper application of the reliability and safety engineering principles and methods will solve many of such issues and enable more reliable and safety transportation system for our whole society across the globe.
The RAM and LCC process is a key success factor for the railway industry and support the physical asset during the concept, design, manufacturing and operation life cycle phases based on recognizing reliability and safety engineering concept application. In order to implement such process, it´s necessary to establish a program concerning all key elements such as RAMS plan, organizational structure, responsibilities, investment and defined deliverable deadlines. However, the RAMS and LCC program is also an opportunity to enhance the physical asset performance since the concept phase. Similar to other programs, the employees involved in this program need to be trained and have access to the best reliability and safety engineering methods and tools as well as ILS concept and methods to enable a successful asset performance throughout the life cycle.
Despite all efforts across the railway industry in many companies to implement the RAM and LCC program throughout all asset life cycles, is still a big challenge for different reasons such as culture, organizational structure and leadership.
However, a very good result with RAMS and LCC implementation have been achieved in the railway industry across the globe in the last years but still need to be improved.
Therefore, the book starts describing the basic concept of reliability and safety engineering, RAMS and LCC program and process. In addition, the big challenges of the RAMS and LCC program implementation as well as the reliability pitfalls are also listed in the first chapter.
The further chapter describes in detail the most importance methods applied in the RAMS and LCC program such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Quantitative Accelerated Life Test (QALT), High Accelerated Life Test (HALT), Life Time Data Analysis (LDA), Reliability, Availability, Maintainability Analysis (RAM), Human Reliability Analysis (HRA), Integrated Logistic Support (ILS), Risk Analysis methods and Asset Management. In each chapter some case studies are presented to clarify the theoretical concepts.
Therefore, this book aims to give the readers a background about the reliability and safety engineering methods applied to the RAMS and LCC programs as well as the importance to physical asset optimization and management during the operational phase. I hope you enjoy it and the book enables you to put in practice some of the methods described here in your daily professional activities in the railway industry.
