“This is the plain story of one who began life in a little township of Vermont about thirty-two years ago, and who, several times during the past two years, has been dangerously near losing it in a search for gold along the glacier-bound coasts of Alaska, in the frozen regions of the Yukon, and in the rich gulches of the Klondike.”

William B. Haskell, with thirty dollars in his pocket, set off west to find his fortune in the West.

Over the next two years he panned and dug in search of gold in the freezing conditions of Canada and the Klondike.

Two Years in the Klondike and Alaskan Gold Fields 1896-1898 is a brilliant account of the short period that Haskell risked his life for “rich dirt — enough to provide them with a comfortable amount of gold dust.”

“Woven around a detailed, frequently humorous narrative of the successes and failures of the author and his partner, the book offers insights into Klondike life ranging from practical advice on the techniques of cabin and boat building to observations on the virulence of mosquitoes, tent care, the quality of Klondike ‘restaurants,’ and the wisdom of justice dispensed by Alaskan miners’ meetings in the absence of any other form of law.” Ian N. Higginson, Polar Record

“His account of his months in the North has the drama and color of the bestsellers he most likely read” Charlotte Gray, Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike

“Unlike most of the books on the Klondike, Haskell told folks how life really was in the gold camps. He didn’t bother to make exaggerated claims or paint a rosy picture. … surprisingly easy to read, and his unique observations and witty remarks help make the book a gem.” Jeremiah Wood, The Outdoor Sporting Library

Two Years in the Klondike and Alaskan Gold Fields 1896-1898 formed the basis of the Discovery Channel’s mini-series Klondike directed by Simon Cellan Jones and produced by Ridley Scott. Haskell was played by Richard Madden. Haskell’s book was first published when he returned from the Klondike in 1898.
At the start of the 1960s the USA was unquestionably the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world.

Yet despite its prosperity and influence there were areas of the country which seemed to have been forgotten.

In 1962 Harry Caudill, a lawyer and legislator, decided to shine a light upon the appalling conditions which he witnessed in Eastern Kentucky.

His introduction lays out the issues which he saw before him: A million Americans in the Southern Appalachians live in conditions of squalor, ignorance and ill health which could scarcely be equaled in Europe or Japan or, perhaps, in parts of mainland Asia.

Caudill begins with the history of region, from its first settlements through to the Civil War, the feuds that erupted between violent neighbors, the emerging lumber trade and the advent of the coal industry, before uncovering the devastation of the depression, the effects of massive environmental damage and the ever continuing decline into poverty and despair for many of the inhabitants.

“Mr. Caudill’s richly informed and sobering account of the Cumberlands’ painful plight is the product not only of thorough research, but also of an intimate knowledge of the region and its people.” Saturday Review

“The picture he has assembled is clear without undue simplification, and forceful without spurious appeal to emotion. … In the social, economic, and legislative battles which must be fought, and fought soon if the people of our Southern Appalachians are ever to be relieved of their very real and pressing difficulties, no finer single weapon can be imagined than this one book.” Kirkus Reviews

“The pathetic history of the Cumberland Plateau in Eastern Kentucky illustrates the results, for men and nature, of unregulated free enterprise, the pre-eminence of the rights of property, and the absence of responsible public supervision.” The New York Review of Books

“Night Comes to the Cumberlands, focused nationwide attention on the plight of Appalachia's residents. President John F. Kennedy appointed a commission to investigate conditions in the region and his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, made Appalachia a keystone of his War on Poverty.” The New York Times

The success of this book was immediately felt in the Cumberlands as in the quarter-century succeeding its publication more than $15 billion were spent in the impoverished region. But even though this injection of aid was widely appreciated Caudill and others stated that the forecast was still bleak and only marginal improvement had been made.

This work is essential reading for anyone interested in the social history of the United States, the history of Kentucky and the continuing issue of poverty in rural areas.

Harry Caudill as an American author, historian, lawyer, legislator, and environmentalist from Letcher County, in the coalfields of southeastern Kentucky. His influential book Night Comes to the Cumberlands was first published in 1962 and he passed away in 1990.

Quantum physics originated from Max Planck’s great discovery of the quantum of energy in 1900. Exactly how was the quantum revolution ignited by Planck? Were there some devious roads he walked during his discovery? In his fascinating Nobel Lecture and Scientific Autobiography, which are carefully edited in this book, Planck told us how he discovered the quantum “after a few weeks of the most strenuous work” of his life, and what “an unexpected vista began to appear” after the darkness was lifted. In particular, he vividly recollected the wrong paths that he followed during his discovery, which may be the most intriguing part of his quantum story for general readers.

Besides, this little book also includes Einstein’s famous tribute to Planck at his 60th birthday celebration, as well as an excerpt of the memorial address delivered by Max von Laue, Planck's former student and later his colleague and friend. These materials will further help us to understand what a quantum man Planck was and why he became a "reluctant" revolutionary.

Book Excerpt:

My mind absorbed avidly, like a revelation, the first law I knew to possess absolute, universal validity, independently from all human agency: The principle of the conservation of energy. I shall never forget the graphic story Müller told us, at his raconteur's best, of the bricklayer lifting with great effort a heavy block of stone to the roof of a house. The work he thus performs does not get lost; it remains stored up, perhaps for many years, undiminished and latent in the block of stone, until one day the block is perhaps loosened and drops on the head of some passerby.

The effect of my dissertation on the physicists of those days was nil. None of my professors at the University had any understanding for its contents, as I learned for a fact in my conversations with them.

My futile attempts to fit the elementary quantum of action somehow into the classical theory continued for a number of years, and they cost me a great deal of effort. Many of my colleagues saw in this something bordering on a tragedy. But I feel differently about it. For the thorough enlightenment I thus received was all the more valuable.

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.

Erma’s Attic is a heartfelt and humorous tale, filled with historical facts, folksy phrases and amusing adages of the Southern United States.

When Annie, a young doctoral student living in Charleston, West Virginia, takes the advice of an elderly friend and spends a few nights at a farmhouse up Black Hollow Road, she discovers a journal in the attic.

The aged diary, she soon realizes, was written by her dear friend, Erma, who had recently passed on over to the sweet by and by. Her friend’s memories transport her on an adventure that defines and embraces involvement in the women’s suffrage movement, chatting with Mary “Mother” Jones, and standing vigil outside collapsed coal mines in the first half of the twentieth century.

Tales from the past, and from the present when the journal is uncovered, are woven together to ultimately offer readers a compelling picture of life in the West Virginia Appalachians.

Erma’s Attic (Angels of the Appalachians Book 2) renews the stories of Annie, Will, Erma, Ida, and of course, Hank. If you enjoyed Angels of the Appalachians, you are invited to explore this account of a friendship that spans across decades. If you haven’t read the first book, don’t fret, because you will still find yourself wishing to call on the fine folks of the Appalachian Mountains.

It’s time to kick off your shoes, relax for a spell, and meet some of the angels who have made West Virginia so gloriously wild and wonderful.

This delightful fictional novella is available on Kindle and in Paperback.

Zen of Analog Circuit Design

RECENTLY UPDATED WITH NEW CONTENT
From 2011 till 2013, I taught a course titled Analog Design for all which covered concepts starting with MOS transistors and progressed till the design of two-stage amplifiers. The course introduced concepts in a manner that led the student to the synthesis of new circuits, not merely their analysis. But I still felt that there was a more intuitive way to introduce Analog Circuit Design, one that would bring out the beauty of the subject so that the student could ‘stop and smell the roses’.

But why a ‘Zen of Analog’…?

Because the foundational concepts in Analog closely mirror human relationships! The purpose of this book is to take a simplified and intuitive path to unlock some profound secrets of Analog. The protagonist of this book is Ang-Lao, a medieval monk who brings his insights into the Analog world to solve the challenges in human relationships.

The book addresses a problem statement that much of Analog Circuit Design tries to solve - how do you realize an ideal buffer? It starts with the simple concepts of voltage sources and current sources. From the I-V curve of the MOS transistor, we see how it behaves much like a Voltage controlled current source (VCCS). The inherent challenge in getting even a simple two-transistor circuit to work is the conflict arising from having two such current source-like elements in series. The digital inverter is shown to be one such circuit that can function like an analog amplifier, albeit over a narrow range of input voltage. The effect of loading on such a circuit is illustrated graphically and is shown as an added challenge in getting it to work in an analog manner.

Having understood the complications involved, we see how through the strikingly simple but immensely powerful concept of feedback, one of the two transistors can be modified subtly to make it behave like a voltage source. In that process, we realize our first approximation to an ideal analog buffer. We then see how manifestations of the same concept leads us to the synthesis of a whole bunch of two transistor circuits - source followers, common source amplifiers with gm-load and with diode-connected load, and differential amplifiers . The concepts used in synthesis of such elegant circuits are also extended to the analysis of much more complex circuits, for example, a Voltage to Current (V2I) conversion circuit. We introduce the concept of small signal parameters, gm, gds, showing the calculations for the gain and output impedance of our circuits, and quantifying how good each of our buffers really are.

The narrative switches between concepts of Electronics and the story of Aman-Ra, an engineer from Medieval Egypt. Struggling with his relationships, his guiding light is Ang-Lao, who teaches him the secret to happy relationships.

For some, this book will signal the end of the fear of Analog. For others, it will be the start of a love story.

Concepts covered

oI-V characteristics of Voltage & Current sources
oIdeal & non-ideal sources
oControlled sources
oActive and passive elements
oI-V characteristics of a MOSFET
oMOS transistor as a Voltage controlled current source
oDigital inverter as Analog amplifier
oOperating point
oCommon source (CS) amplifier
oEffect of loading on a CS amplifier
oFeedback
oHow can you make a MOSFET behave like a voltage source?
oSynthesis of a CS amplifier with diode-connected load
oAnalysis of a V2I circuit including an introduction to current mirror
oSynthesis of CS amplifier with gm-load
oSynthesis of source follower circuit
oSmall signal parameters: gm, gds
oSmall-signal gain and output impedance
oSynthesis of a differential amplifier
oSynthesis of an Operational amplifier
oRealizing the buffer using the Operational Amplifier
