“I do not know of another story by an actual miner that is so well written and so true to that wonderful life in the Days of Gold.” Horace Kephart

The California Gold Rush is one the most interesting periods in American history and J.D. Borthwick’s classic memoir captures the prosperity and excitement of the West Coast in the early 1850s.

Following the discovery of gold in California in 1848, Scotsman Borthwick left New York and sailed to the West Coast where he joined the gold hunters of California.

Borthwick’s account provides a fascinating look at life in the new cities of San Francisco and Sacramento, chronicling the often lawless society which came hand in hand with the newly found wealth of the gold hunters.

Drinking, gambling and violence played a huge part in Borthwick’s world and his memoir includes many compelling tales of personal scrapes and adventures.

The Gold Hunters offers a unique look at the life in the gold camps of the nineteenth century American West — the different cultures attracted by the discovery of gold, how they related to one another and their contrasting food, clothes and entertainment.

John David Borthwick, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1824, was a nomadic Scottish journalist and author, he first arrived in North America in 1847 and three years later found himself in the Gold Rush of California. He eventually left America in 1856 and spent the rest of his days in Scotland and London. This edited edition of Borthwick's memoir was first published in 1917.

“PT’s met the enemy at closer quarters (and with greater frequency) than any other type of surface craft. The crews of no other vessels experienced so high a degree of personal engagement with the enemy.” — Robert Bulkley

Robert Bulkley’s definitive history of patrol torpedo boats in World War Two is exceptionally detailed, meticulously researched, and is a must-read for any naval enthusiast.

Bulkley joined the PT division of the Navy in 1941, and immediately fell in love with the small and deadly weaponized boat. After V-J Day, 1945, the Navy continued Bulkley’s commission and asked him to write the official history of PT boats in WWII — At Close Quarters: PT Boats in the United States Navy is the groundbreaking result.

In At Close Quarters, Bulkley uses the fastidious records kept by the US Navy to compile a book which serves as not just a record of the role of the PT boat's role in WWII but also as a lesson to future military and naval scholars.

Best-known as the boat that future president John F. Kennedy commanded in the Pacific Theater in WWII, popular interest in PT boats has grown substantially since they first emerged as brilliant boats in naval engagements throughout the war.

Bulkley provides a detailed account of the origins and history of PT boats, from the part they played in WWI to the improvements and developments made to their design prior to WWII.

He analyses the role of PT boats in some of the major sea battles in the Pacific, opening with Pearl Harbor, through to their involvement in the Mediterranean, the D-Day operations in the English Channel as well as the Solomons campaign and the conquest of New Guinea.

“The thorough and competent account herein of over-all PT boat operations in World War II, compiled by Captain Robert Bulkley, a distinguished PT boat commander, should therefore prove of wide interest. The widest use of the sea, integrated fully into our national strength, is as important to America in the age of nuclear power and space travel as in those stirring days of the birth of the Republic.” — President John F Kennedy

“An invaluable history of WWII PT-Boat operations worldwide.” — Pacific Wrecks

“This thorough and objective account of the operations of PT boats in the U.S. Navy in World War II was prepared in the year after V-J Day by an officer who served in them through most of the war in the far reaches of the Pacific. He knew and loved these small, fast craft with hornet sting. They played their part with zest in the far reaching, powerful Navy team. He gave to the research into the records, into the memories of other participants, and to the writing itself the same zest. As a result he produced a shipshape manuscript.” — Rear Admiral Ernest McNeill Eller

Robert J. Bulkley, a retired USNR captain now deceased, commanded PT boats in the southwest Pacific, mostly in New Guinea and the Philippines, from June 1942 to the war's end. This work was first published in 1962, three years before Captain Bulkley passed away

"Six Months on a Slaver" is a true narrative providing a realistic descriptions of the horrors of the slave trade experience of an American seaman who ships from New London, Conn., in 1860, on a three years' cruise, in an ostensible whaler, which proves to be a slaver on its way to the African coast.

It is a plain, unvarnished narrative of the manner of obtaining and of conveying a cargo of Africans from the African coast to Yucatan. Several instances of inhuman treatment inflicted on the poor slaves, and the general unpleasantness of the subject, work upon the sympathies too much to make it altogether pleasant reading; but the author tells his story simply, without aiming at producing any sensation, and it appears a faithful record of the way the debasing traffic was carried on.

Edward Manning was a sailor from New London, Connecticut, who in 1860 signed on with the "whaling" ship "Thomas Watson" only to later find it was a "slaver" ship on a voyage to transport slaves from Africa to Yucatan. Manning wrote of his experiences aboard the slaver in his 1879 book "Six Months on a Slaver: A True Narrative."

Contents
PART I. THE VOYAGE OUT.
I. A Firm Resolve is the result of more than 15 years of investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 22 major aircraft accidents that befell South African Airways in the period between its founding and the loss of the B747-244 "Helderberg" in 1987.
The book recounts the final moments of each aircraft with moment-by-moment summaries of the crashes together with the steps followed by investigators' to determine the cause of each accident.
The easy reading narrative style uses facts drawn from the actual accident investigator's notes, official reports and interviews with personnel who were involved with the actual investigations and makes a normally distant and confusing discipline easily approachable for the lay person.
After reading this work by award-winning investigative journalist Mark D Young, the reader will appreciate that aviation safety is a developing and dynamic science which stands on the shoulders of all the work undertaken by previous investigations such as those detailed here.
Of particular interest considering recent deep-ocean airliner losses, is the extensive detailing of the search and rescue operation in regard to flight SA295 which is still, to date of publication, the deepest underwater airliner debris recovery operation of all time.
Interestingly enough, a recommendation by the investigators in regard to the location systems on data recorders has lain forgotten. Had it been actioned, mysteries such as the loss of MH370 may have been easier to resolve..

Training Circular TC 3-04.5 Instrument Flight for Army Aviators April 2017
TC 3-04.5 presents fundamentals, procedures, and techniques for instrument flying that are essential to the effective conduct of military operations and creates the ability to enable commanders to make risk decisions in less than optimal weather while preserving combat power. This publication is written for Army Aircrews to develop a fundamental understanding of knowledge and skills necessary to operate in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). TC 3-04.5 is an excellent reference for Army aircrews; however, it cannot be expected that this training circular is all inclusive or a full comprehension of the information will be obtained by simply reading the text.
TC 3-04.5 facilitates adherence to Army regulation (AR) 95-1 by providing guidance and procedures for standard Army instrument flying. Aircraft flight instrumentation and mission objectives are varied, making instruction general for equipment and detailed for accomplishment of maneuvers. Guidance found in this manual is both technique and procedure oriented. Aircraft operator manuals provide the detailed instructions required for particular aircraft instrumentation or characteristics. When used with related flight directives and publications, this publication provides adequate guidance for instrument flight under most circumstances but is not a substitute for sound judgment; circumstances may require modification of prescribed procedures. Aircrew members charged with the safe operation of United States Army, Army National Guard (ARNG), or United States Army Reserve (USAR) aircraft must be knowledgeable of the guidance contained herein. This manual applies to all military, civilian, and/or contractor personnel who operate Army aircraft, and is designed as a technical reference for Army aviators who operate under instrument flight rules (IFR) in the National Airspace System (NAS) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) and Instrument Flying Handbook (IFH) are not regulatory; however, both provide information that reflects examples of operating techniques and procedures required in other regulations. Furthermore, the AIM and IFH contain some techniques and procedures not consistent with Army mission requirements, regulatory guidance, waivers, exemptions, and accepted techniques and procedures. These publications, however, are the accepted standard for civil aviation and reflect general techniques and procedures used by other pilots. Much of the information contained in this manual is reproduced from the AIM and IFH and adapted for Army use. If a subject is not covered in this manual or another Army regulation, personnel will follow guidance in the AIM and the IFH unless mission requirements dictate otherwise.
