Colonel Henry G. Prout, who succeeded Mr. Westinghouse as President of the Union Switch & Signal Co., and prior to that time had been its Vice-President and General Manager for eleven years; in 1921 published "A Life of George Westinghouse" which was based not only on his own personal knowledge of his friend Westinghouse, but also an exhaustive research into all available records and personal sources of information.

The remarkable fund of fact and anecdote thus accumulated has been built with rare art and broad vision into a volume of absorbing interest to every engineer—indeed to every thoughtful student of human nature and human achievement.

To engineers, who measure the greatness of men by their contribution to the welfare of mankind, the life of George Westinghouse stands out as one of the most interesting and inspiring in modern history. Within the 330 pages of this volume, the story of his rise from a modest early environment to the leadership of many great industrial enterprises, and a position of acknowledged pre-eminence among American Engineers, is told by Col. Prout, a former business associate who was well acquainted with him for nearly thirty years, and was an intimate friend during the last twelve years of his life.

George Westinghouse was a great man. He was a genius, but a good deal more than that. He developed his own and others’ inventions and was a business executive as well as an engineer. Above all this he was a gentleman, associating always with worth-while people, and benevolent to his employees because that was his nature, not merely because it was “good business’ to take an interest in their welfare. His pre-eminence as a noble citizen is indicated by the very lines of his portrait, and readers of this book who are unacquainted with his career will be charmed to see how the varied acts of his life, as here narrated, confirm the impressions which they will gain from this picture.

The candor of the author is always in evidence, and the great things which glorified the name of Westinghouse from a hundred different angles are not allowed to obscure the truth necessary to make an honest narrative. Mistakes and reverses are recognized with almost Scriptural fidelity.

Prout is not only a scholar, he is one of the most accomplished writers in the field of engineering, and a discriminating observer. Adding to this his own acquaintance with many of the topics dealt with, and his years of association with Westinghouse himself, one may reasonably expect a thoroughly illuminating narrative. This expectation is not disappointed. The reading public is fortunate in having the benefit of such an unusual combination.

The completed volume will not only prove absorbing to those engaged in engineering pursuits to whom the details of the work of Mr. Westinghouse are more or less familiar, but should also appeal strongly to those who know of him only as a great inventor, organizer and manufacturer. Perhaps no book for a long time has been issued which is better adapted to inspire the younger engineers to emulate the activity, courage, persistence, resourcefulness and pleasure in undertaking and solving engineering problems characteristic of Mr. Westinghouse.

The life history of George Westinghouse is a detailed history also of the many great enterprises which he founded; and which for the most part are still functioning with ever-increasing magnitude. As the fascinating record of a wonderful life; as an intimate disclosure of many heretofore unrevealed industrial episodes; as an inspiring analysis of the engineer's part in modern civilization; this volume well repays reading, and must be recognized as an unusual contribution to the literature of our age.

This thematic book introduces the history of the Firth of Forth, the gateway to the east of Scotland and Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.

Chapters cover the glory days of Sir Andrew Wood and Great Michael, the ‘greatest ship afloat’ as well as the day that shipwrecked Spaniards from the Armada called at Anstruther. There is a chapter on the doomed emigrant ships that carried optimistic Scots to tragedy in the New World and on invasion fleets that hovered off the coast. The fighting Leith smacks are mentioned, together with the German air force’s first attack on Great Britain – and their first losses as the Spitfires of 602, City of Glasgow and 603, City of Edinburgh squadron met them head on. There are whaling ships and fishing boats, great tea clippers with a Forth connection and the Leith built Sirius that was the first ship to cross the Atlantic under steam power alone.

The historical background to each of the Forth islands is covered, with tales of shipwreck and holy men, pirates and lighthouses, plague victims, grim prisons and a Jacobite fortress that held out against the Scottish Navy. The part played by Inchkeith in the Normandy landings, and the batteries that defended the Forth are mentioned, as well as the Battle of May Island and the German U-boats that infested the rugged seas. The Forth skies saw early hot air balloons and the airship that was first to cross the Atlantic, flying from Drem in Midlothian.

The characters are not neglected, with Alexander Selkirk, the original Robinson Crusoe and Samuel Greig, ‘father of the Russian Navy’ featured; neither is John Paul Jones the Scottish born American seaman, and Reverend Shirra, his Kirkcaldy nemesis. The legendary ferry William Muir is also given her well-deserved slot in history.

Finally, there are the bridges - three of them now - each one a work of art and testimony to the skill of a different generation of engineers. The Forth Bridge, built by the Briggers, many of whom lost their lives; the Forth Road Bridge with its elegant span, and the new Queensferry bridge, due to open in 2017; a triple thrust across the Forth that was once known as the Scottish Sea.
