Sudoku is a wonderful game. Of all the puzzles, it is for many people, if not most, their favorite. Some refer to Sudoku as addictive. That’s not a bad thing; it just means that the game is so much fun and so mind-engaging, that once you begin to play it’s hard to stop. But there’s a little problem . . . hardly anyone knows how to play Sudoku beyond a mere scratch of the surface.

It’s not their fault. There are scores of books available, all with a multitude of Sudoku puzzles. But there’s virtually no instruction. I wonder if some of the people who produce Sudoku books even know how to play, because there’s no evidence in their books that they do. They could (and some may), literally pay someone to make the puzzles, and then put them in a book and slap their own names on the cover.

Why is Sudoku instruction necessary? Let’s compare it to the other puzzles. A crossword puzzle book, for instance, needs no instruction. The first time we played a crossword puzzle, likely as a child, someone showed us what to do: “Answer the questions and fill in the blanks.” The whole instruction process may have taken a minute or two. Same with a jigsaw puzzle: “Connect the matching pieces until all the pieces are used and the image on the box is formed. Hint: Start with the edge pieces.” That’s about it.

But Sudoku is an advanced detective game. And there are lots of methods to solve the clues contained in the numbers of each puzzle. Some are very simple: Only Candidate. Some are moderate: Naked Twins. And some are very advanced: XYZ Wings.

Learn to Play Sudoku, by award-winning Sudoku writer David Klein, teaches 15 of the most important solving methods. When you learn the first five or six methods, which are very easy to learn, you’ll be able to solve a majority of printed Sudoku puzzles. When you learn the first eight, you’ll be able to solve about 95 percent of printed puzzles. When you learn all 15 methods, you’ll be able to solve virtually 100 percent of printed puzzles.

Learn to Play Sudoku will show you how to enjoy the wonderful world of Sudoku.
In the wake of their recent loss, the Caverns & Creatures gang are left hanging. Do their choices amount to more than waiting around to die of thirst and leaping to a quicker death? Probably, or else this would have been a much shorter book.
