It’s on nights such as this, as I lie on my back watching my breath mist up in the chill air above me, that I wonder.
How is it that the stars haven’t changed?
With everything that’s going on – the war, the decimation, the end of life as we know it – how can they still be up there, twinkling merrily away as if nothing’s wrong? As if it’s all still okay?
I just don’t get it.

The world as we know it has ended. Bree and her little sister Millie are two of the few survivors, kept safe thanks to Captain Brunton and his squad of soldiers. It's a hard life, even harder when Bree doesn't know where they're going or what they're doing. Captain Brunton's Rules - Number One: You aren't a soldier and you don't need to know.

But then Millie gets captured and all of a sudden that word, that word that's only ever been whispered around Bree and her sister - "breeders" - is suddenly everywhere. Bree doesn't even know what it means, but she knows it's trouble.

Everything's changing and Bree doesn't know who to trust. Kyle, who sees Bree only as a little sister, though she's desprerate for more? Captain Brunton, who's gruff and snappish and intimidating? This is a small story about how you can truly love, even if you are a ghost.

The town lived its usual life. Occasionally a gang of children would rush through the streets with joyful shouts. The adults who saw them smiled sadly-many of these sorceresses had lost their parents in a war that ended only a year ago. And it was worthwhile for adults to think how their faces were harsh, and there was anger in their eyes.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London on December 1843. Dickens was not the first author to celebrate the Christmas season in literature, nor was he the first to have a deeply felt humanitarian concern for the poor, but it wasn’t until he visited the work-worn industrial city of Manchester that his conscience dictated that he straightway publish a story to help the poor. After some thought, he decided upon the name “A Christmas Carol.

His goal in writing A Christmas Carol was two-fold; firstly and foremost, he felt a deep sense of regret over the social injustices and impoverished living conditions of the poor and wanted to voice this concern to the public. By writing A Christmas Carol, it gave him the vehicle he needed to superimpose his humanitarian vision on the wealthy and thus encourage them to share a portion of their wealth with the poor during the Christmas holiday so that they too could share in the joy and festivities of the season. In addition, he reasoned that when they saw the joy that it would bring to the poor, they might decide to extend their generosity beyond the holiday season. Secondly, Dickens' career as a best-selling author was on the decline, and he needed to produce a tale that would prove both profitable and popular. The publishing of A Christmas Carol provided this. It was a powerful, impressive and enduring tale.

For source material to write A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Dickens drew heavily on his own personal childhood experiences, which were profoundly humiliating, as well on the plight of the poor and their children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s. He drew also on Washington Irving's essays on old English Christmas traditions published in his Sketch Book (1820), on fairy tales and nursery stories, and on satirical essays and religious tracts.

The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim for two reasons. Its timing of publication and because it identified and addressed a specific need, namely “The Poor Need Help.” In regards to timely, it was published at a time when singing Christmas Carols was becoming popular and the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past such as the giving of Christmas cards and decorating Christmas trees. Now in regarding the identifying and addressing the specific the story is written about a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. All these visitations were to warn him that he needed to amend his ways, namely, Stop being a miser and start helping the poor; or else, face eternal damnation.
