With A to Z Classics, discover or rediscover all the classics of literature.

Contains Active Table of Contents (HTML)
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Katherine of Aragon: abandoned woman. Anne Boleyn: ambitious upstart. Jane Seymour: virtuous mother. Anne of Cleves: Flanders Mare. Katherine Howard: adulterous whore. Katherine Parr: the one that got away.

These are our lingering historical afterimages of the six women who married Henry VIII over the course of his thirty-six-year reign. At the age of 18, Henry succeeded to the English throne and married the Spanish princess who had briefly been the wife of his brother Arthur. Katherine of Aragon was both a virgin and a widow when the prince died at the age of fifteen, enabling Henry to marry her himself. Their marriage lasted sixteen contented years, until suddenly, Henry fell in love with Anne Boleyn and sundered England from Rome in order to keep her.

But Henry VIII would not be satisfied even after he took Anne Boleyn for his wife. His vanity, his ego, and his desperate need for a male heir, led him to marry four more women during the last ten years of his life. In this book, you will read about the lives, loves, and secret passions of these women. Four of them died for Henry’s pleasure—but two escaped to tell their stories.

Zacharais Tanee Fomum was a Professor in Organic Chemistry at the University of Yaounde ( Cameroon). As a scientist he co(authored) over 150 scientific Journal Articles and (co)-supervised over 100 Masters and PhD Students. In recognition of his contribution to science the University of Durham awarded him the prestigious recognition of Doctor of Science (Dsc).

Professor Fomum was also the founding Apostle, visionary and leader of Christian Missionary Fellowship International (CMFI), a Christian based Pentecostal movement. By the time of his going to be with the lord, this movement had sent out missionaries to over 60 countries on the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Australia. This in addition to churches planted all over the nation of Cameroon and the authoring of over 100 Christian books. He was an apostle who served God in faithfulness and the impact of his ministry and service have been far reaching; going beyond the ministry he founded and led. As a scientist he accomplished more than most of his pairs who are dedicated to science on a full time basis. In 40 years of service as a Spiritual Team Leader, Brother Zach has carried out over 250 fasts, ranging from 3 to 40 days, drinking only water or water with soluble vitamins. He had done 2 previous supra-long fasts; that is, of more than 40 days. The Lord then called him to a crucial battle in an 80-day supra-long fast to overthrow some major wicked hosts in heavenly places. He obeyed, and on the 70th day of the fast, God told him that He had dismantled them that night. The purpose of the fast having been accomplished, Brother Zach stopped fasting. The story of his life and ministry is a testimony to the priesthood of all believers that bridges the gap between the circular and the office bearers in Christian ministry. His life is obviously a testimony of what God can do with a vessel that places itself at this disposal. A challenge and an encouragement to young Christians (students and youths) to push the frontiers of their possibilities with God to the limits.

Howell Harris was brought up to regard the Nonconformists as "a perverted and dangerously erroneous set of people." Hardly a promising start for a man who was to play a major role in the Welsh Revival. Yet in these extracts from his writings and diaries we can read the thoughts of Howell Harris before, during and after his own conversion. We can see God breaking through the barriers separating "church and chapel", and discover Christians of different denominations preparing the country for revival. Wesley, Whitefield, Harris. These great 18th century preachers worked both independently and together to preach the Living Gospel. This book is a vivid first-hand account of the joys, hardships and struggles of one of these men -- Howell Harris.

King George VI, or Albert as he was known prior to his kingship, had a career in the Royal Navy and served during the First World War before King Edward VIII’s decision to abdicate his throne. What does the Dalai Lama's life teach us?

Certainly, he is a sterling example of turning adversity into joyful service. But there is more to him than that. He is also a model of innovation and adaptation. He has taken the tenets of Buddhism and made them relevant to everyone. He has found commonalities in the teachings of Catholicism and Buddhism.

His message is not just about personal happiness and good karma, it is also very much about respecting the earth’s resources, recognizing the equality of all people, and sharing with the less fortunate.

He has said that, at ninety, he will decide whether his long series of lives as the Dalai Lama will end. As of this writing, he is nearly eighty. Will he live another ten years?

We can only hope so.
