"Cars are the sculptures of our everyday lives." - Chris Bangle

This very sentiment inspired me to sculpt my life differently — at least once — to use my car for something other than going back and forth to the grocery store, work, or favoured restaurant. We live in the era of the motorised carriage; we all have them. Ever fantasize about hopping into your car with a few sandwiches and a map, driving past your work, the grocery store, and beyond everything you know? Driving as fast and far as you can every day for a week and see where you end up? Leaving the safe parameters of your life to find the shape of your life? “Um, where is Belize” is that story.

As days of non-stop driving are unsafe, I talked my cousin, whom I had never met, into joining me. After I had sold him on the virtues of a trip to Belize, he gave me the title of the book. "Um, where is Belize?"

.
This epic, high octane ride on the hippy hiway begins in the psychedelic sixties and spans two decades of globe-trotting, crisscrossing five continents and chronicles the escapades and misadventures of an American fugitive on the run from the DEA for distributing LSD. Presented in a flashback format, the narrative retraces a wayward path from Vietnam war protests to life on the international hippy circuit. From the wilds of Morocco to the hashish fields of the Bekka valley and Himalayas, from the beaches of Negril, Goa, Mykonos, Bali and Rio, to life in a safari tent in the African bush, the story reveals the trials and tribulations of an unorthodox character being constantly shaped by his fall from society’s good grace.
Pushed past the point of no return, with the feds in hot pursuit, the narrator exceeds all his expectations and experiences romantic highs in the most exotic destinations on earth, before the ‘Lonely Planet’ put them on the back packers’ map – highs tempered by grim lows marked by a lover’s death, a plunge into the south American cocaine quagmire and a spin in an Italian loony bin for the criminally insane. The story reveals the absolutely ethnic atmosphere of fabled third world destinations and pays homage to the iconic, quirky western characters starring in the theater of the absurd, during the halcyon hippy heyday.
In this honest portrayal, baring heart and soul, pain and anguish, the narrative reveals an uncanny knack to survive the peaks and pitfalls of life on the run, resulting in an engaging, gripping tale worth telling about a bygone hippy ear rapidly fading from memory.

With A to Z Classics, discover or rediscover all the classics of literature.

Contains Active Table of Contents (HTML)
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

The Recollections of Rifleman Harris is a memoir published in 1848 of the experiences of an enlisted soldier in the 95th Regiment of Foot in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars.
The eponymous soldier was Benjamin Randell Harris, a private who joined the regiment in 1803 and served in many of the early campaigns in the Peninsula War. In the mid-1830s, Harris was working as a cobbler in London when he met an acquaintance, Captain Henry Curling, who asked him to dictate an account of his experiences of army life. This account was then held by Curling until 1848, when he succeeded in getting the manuscript published, preserving one of the very few surviving accounts of military service in this era from a private soldier.

From tragic cases of spousal murder to tragic cases of child murder, this true crime book will surely keep your attention.

Three cases of spousal homicide are among the many murder stories in this volume that will keep you captivated. Read about how two wives, Larissa Schuster and Susan Wright, decided to kill their husbands for greed and about how a husband and father, John Sharpe, decided he did not want to be married anymore, so he killed his wife and daughter. For different reasons, these killers thought that they would get away with their crimes, but the ensuing criminal investigations revealed their evil plans for the world to see.

This volume also features a number of child abduction cases that unfortunately ended in tragedy. Follow the course of these true murder cases and learn how the investigators worked tirelessly to put these monsters behind bars. You will also be introduced to cases that can only be described as strange or weird, such as the case of Donald Webb, who was a master of multiple identities and Vlado Taneski, a journalist who created his own scoops through murder. This may be a true crime book, but you are guaranteed to be at the edge of your seat and will probably think at times that you are actually reading a true crime novel.
